Our sheep need shearing twice a year. Other sheep only need shearing once a year. It provides not only insulation but coolant. Lanolin helps waterproofing and protecting the wool and skin. The Valais are not harmed when sheared, it is just a haircut for them.
We shear on the Swiss method on using a sheep shearing stand. One thing about the Valais are they liked to be pampered and enjoy the after-effects of their trim. (Photos above show the lanolin build up as we shear. Oil needs to be used every 5 minutes to keep the clippers working effectively. Lanolin is an amazing natural moisturiser. Look after your equipment after every use by cleaning, sterilising and store)
